Aby Emmet Shaw (b. 1995, German/Australian) and Iris Chen Qin (b. 1998, Chinese) met during their studies in Visual Arts at the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2023, and developed a shared passion for ceramic art and a pottery business.

On the origin of the name Ironshroom Pottery Co.: While discussing ceramic glazes Aby mentioned a black glaze he liked used in Japan called Temmoku which Iris thought sounded like tie mo gu (鐵蘑菇), literally translating to iron mushroom. At the time we were playing The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and picking many Ironshrooms in the game. On a whim we decided to use the word for our pottery company to celebrate an art practice that embodies a playful cross-cultural synthesis.

Located on Lamma Island: In order to create a unique style of pottery using local materials such as clay, rock and wood we decided to centre our studio in a remote village of Yung Shue Ha on Lamma Island.
